About Marine

Marine navigation and communication equipment for commercial vessels, fishing fleets and workboats across India: fishfinder and chartplotter combos, GMDSS sets, fixed and handheld VHF, AIS and HF. This category covers the equipment on a working vessel's bridge or console: fishfinder and chartplotter combos for position and depth, marine VHF for routine and distress communication, MF/HF for offshore range, radar for detecting anything reflective regardless of whether it cooperates, and autopilot for holding a course. GMDSS, the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, is the regulatory framework that ties the communication equipment together for vessels it applies to. AIS transponders and the NMEA networking that interfaces all of this onto one display are covered in more depth on the Marine Network & Interface page, since that is genuinely separate equipment with its own standards and installation practice.

A chartplotter takes a GNSS position fix and places it on chart data, while a fishfinder uses an echo sounder and transducer to show what is under the hull; a combo unit associates the two so a mark dropped on an echo is dropped at the position the vessel occupied when it appeared. Marine VHF operates around 156 to 163 MHz and travels essentially line of sight, so its range is governed by antenna height at both ends far more than by transmit power. MF and HF work in a much lower band where the ionosphere refracts and returns the signal beyond the horizon, which is why HF reaches from mid-ocean to a shore station where VHF cannot. Radar transmits a microwave pulse from a rotating antenna and measures the reflections that return, giving range and bearing to anything reflective in line of sight without needing the target to carry any equipment at all. Digital Selective Calling (DSC) rides on top of VHF and MF/HF: pressing a distress button sends a data burst carrying the vessel's MMSI and, where the radio has position data, its position, which coast stations and nearby DSC-equipped vessels decode automatically.

How to choose one
Chartplotter-only, fishfinder-only, or a combo
A combo unit is usually right when a mark needs to be dropped on ground that just produced an echo, which is the normal working pattern on a fishing boat. Separate units earn their place when redundancy matters (one combo failure loses both functions at once), when a skipper and a crew member need to watch navigation and sounding at the same time on full screens rather than a cramped split, or when the boat's sounding and navigation needs are badly mismatched in size.
Screen size for the wheelhouse it will live in
Size follows from viewing distance, not budget: a helm within arm's reach reads a 5 inch display fine, while a display mounted above and forward of a seated position needs to grow to stay legible. Diagonal size and resolution are separate specifications, so compare pixel density as well as inches, and count how many panes (chart, sonar, radar, instruments) will run at once before sizing, since a split screen gives each function only a fraction of the display.
Fixed-mount or handheld VHF, or both
A fixed-mount set runs 25 W into a masthead antenna and is where DSC distress alerting belongs, since it draws continuous power and covers by far the greatest range. A handheld goes where the crew goes: deck work, a tender, and abandoning ship, which is why survival-craft VHF exists as a separate carriage item. Most working vessels need both, with the fixed set as primary and at least one waterproof handheld as backup.
Whether the vessel needs HF as well as VHF
VHF is sufficient for coastal and harbour work within coast station coverage. Offshore passages beyond that reach need MF/HF or satellite in addition to VHF, never instead of it, because HF's ionospheric propagation reaches oceanic distances that line-of-sight VHF cannot. Fishing vessels working well out from the coast often rely on HF to reach shore without satellite airtime costs.
Radar, given what AIS already covers
Radar detects anything reflective, cooperating or not: unlit small craft, floating debris, a coastline in fog. AIS only shows vessels that carry it, switched on and correctly programmed. The two answer different questions and a bridge that carries both overlays them on one screen. If a radar is fitted, the choice is mainly antenna length: a radome suits smaller vessels and constrained mounting, while a longer open-array antenna gives sharper bearing discrimination between closely spaced targets at the cost of size, weight and mounting height.
Autopilot compatibility with the boat's actual steering
An autopilot is a chain of parts, not a single product: a drive matched to the vessel's steering type (hydraulic, mechanical cable, chain or solenoid valve), a heading sensor separate from GPS course-over-ground, a rudder feedback unit, and a control head. Waypoint steering also needs the autopilot and the chartplotter to speak the same protocol, NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000, with a gateway budgeted if they differ. Confirm all of this against the specific boat before ordering, not on the day of the install.
Standards that apply
SOLAS Chapter IV and the GMDSS sea areas
The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System divides the world's waters into four sea areas, A1 to A4, defined by which shore-based or satellite alerting coverage actually reaches a vessel there rather than by a fixed distance from the coast, and the radio equipment a SOLAS vessel must carry is set cumulatively by which of those areas she trades in. Every vessel it applies to must be able to raise a distress alert by at least two separate and independent means using different radiocommunication services.
Maritime Mobile Station Licence and MMSI (India)
Fitting a DSC-capable VHF or MF/HF radio in India requires a Maritime Mobile Station Licence, issued by the regional offices of the Wireless Planning and Coordination (WPC) Wing of the Department of Telecommunications, with a separate licence category for fishing trawlers and boats. The radio also needs an MMSI, the nine-digit Maritime Mobile Service Identity obtained through the ship registration route, programmed in before DSC can originate a distress alert at all. Confirm current fees, documentation and validity with the WPC regional licensing office rather than assuming a fixed procedure.
IMO Resolution MSC.149(77): survival craft radio equipment
The performance standard that survival-craft VHF handhelds, carried separately from a vessel's main radio installation for use during abandonment, are built and type-approved against, covering waterproofing, cold-weather operation and minimum battery endurance.
Radio survey and the Cargo Ship Safety Radio Certificate
In India, radio surveys of Indian-flag vessels are carried out by nautical surveyors at the Mercantile Marine Department offices or by Recognised Organisations acting on the administration's behalf — classification societies such as the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register or Bureau Veritas, authorised under the domestic rules giving effect to SOLAS Chapter IV. A satisfactory survey supports the Cargo Ship Safety Radio Certificate (or the radio element of the Passenger Ship Safety Certificate) and its Record of Equipment, checking DSC operation, reserve power, antennas and feeders, and battery expiry dates on portable and survival-craft equipment among other items.
Installation notes

On VHF and HF, range is decided far more by the antenna and its feed than by the radio model: a masthead whip run on good coaxial cable with sealed connectors and a fused supply taken from a sound point outperforms a stronger radio on a tired antenna run every time. An HF installation additionally needs a proper ground or counterpoise on a non-conductive hull and a supply able to deliver its transmit current, since a marine SSB set can draw tens of amps while transmitting. A radar's mounting has its own constraints: an open-array scanner needs swept clearance all round and a mast or platform rated for its wind load, and both dome and open-array units carry compass-safe distances and radiation safe-distance figures that have to be respected at the planning stage, not discovered afterwards. MARPA radar target tracking additionally needs a separately fitted heading sensor before it will compute a tracked target's course and closest point of approach. An autopilot is not finished once wired in: it needs commissioning, compass swing and deviation correction, rudder feedback zeroing and end-stop limits, then sea trials to tune its response, and a system fitted but not tuned will hunt or fail to hold course in a seaway. Across all of this equipment, programme the MMSI as soon as it is issued and confirm a live position feed reaches every DSC-capable radio, since a distress alert without a position is far less useful to a rescue coordinator.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a separate fishfinder and chartplotter, or is a combo unit enough?

A combo is the right call for most working boats, because it lets a mark be dropped on an echo at the exact position it appeared, without reading a position off one screen and typing it into another. Should I fit radar, or is AIS enough?

They cover different failure modes and most bridges benefit from both. AIS only shows vessels that carry it, switched on and correctly programmed; it shows nothing about an unlit small craft, floating debris or a headland in fog. Radar detects anything reflective regardless of whether it cooperates, but cannot identify a target by name the way AIS data does. A vessel working coastal waters in poor visibility or among unlit small craft gets more from radar; one operating mainly in busy shipping lanes gets more from AIS at a fraction of the cost.

What does a GMDSS radio survey actually check?

Whether the fitted equipment matches the vessel's certified sea area, that DSC alerting works with the correct MMSI and a live position feed, main and reserve power supplies, antenna and feeder condition, battery expiry dates on survival-craft and portable equipment, NAVTEX reception, and the supporting paperwork: type approval certificates, the Record of Equipment, service station reports and crew certification.

I've bought an autopilot control head. What else do I need before it will actually steer the boat?

A drive matched to the vessel's steering type, a dedicated heading sensor (not GPS course-over-ground, which lags and includes drift), a rudder feedback unit fitted at the quadrant, and, if it will steer to a route, a protocol match with the chartplotter over NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000. After installation it still needs commissioning: compass swing, rudder feedback zeroing and sea trials to tune the response, without which it will hunt or fail to hold a course.
