About Land Mobile

Professional two-way radio for industry, public safety and site operations across India, including ATEX-certified intrinsically safe transceivers for refineries, chemical plants and other hazardous areas. Land mobile radios are the handheld and vehicle-mounted two-way transceivers used by security teams, warehouse and port staff, construction crews, and factory floors to talk instantly across a site without relying on a mobile network. The category spans simple licence-free radios for small teams, licensed analog and digital handhelds and mobiles for larger operations, repeaters and controllers that extend coverage across a campus, and ATEX-certified intrinsically safe units built to operate around flammable gases and dust.

Two radios can talk directly to each other on a single shared channel (simplex), which is fine over short distances but limited by terrain, walls and antenna height. A repeater listens on one frequency and retransmits on another (duplex), picking up a low-power handheld's signal and rebroadcasting it at higher power from a rooftop or tower antenna to cover an entire site or town. Radios that transmit outside the small set of licence-free channels set aside for short-range use need a wireless operating licence from India's WPC (Wireless Planning and Coordination) wing, which assigns the frequency and authorises the equipment for that use.

How to choose one
Analog vs digital (DMR/IDAS)
Analog radios are simple, inexpensive and interoperable with almost any other analog set on the same frequency. Digital protocols like DMR and IDAS encode voice into a digital signal, which gives clearer audio at the edge of range, supports two independent talk paths on one channel (useful for busy sites), and adds features like individual calling and built-in encryption. Digital radios can usually still receive analog transmissions but the reverse isn't true, so a mixed fleet needs planning.
Licensed vs licence-free
Licence-free radios operate on the PMR446 band (446 to 446.2 MHz) at a fixed low power and need no WPC paperwork, making them a fast way to equip small teams, but their low power limits range and they can't be reprogrammed onto other frequencies. Licensed radios operate on a frequency assigned specifically to the buyer, with a WPC wireless operating licence covering that use, and give far more control over range, channel capacity and interference from other users.
Standard vs ATEX-certified for hazardous areas
A standard radio's electronics can produce a spark or enough heat to ignite flammable gas, vapour or dust, which makes it unsafe on an oil and gas site, in a chemical plant, or anywhere combustible atmospheres are present. An ATEX or IECEx intrinsically safe radio is designed and certified so that its internal circuits can't release enough energy to trigger ignition even under fault conditions, and it must be used with the specific battery, antenna and accessories listed on its certificate.
Handheld vs mobile/base station
Handhelds go where people go and typically run 1 to 5 watts on a battery, which is plenty for a warehouse floor or a construction site. Mobile radios mount in a vehicle and run on the vehicle's power at higher output, giving longer range and a bigger external antenna option. A base station or repeater sits at a fixed, elevated location and is the backbone that lets low-power handhelds cover a whole site instead of just a few hundred metres.
Standards that apply
ATEX 2014/34/EU and IECEx
ATEX is the European Union directive covering equipment intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, and it defines zones by how often a hazardous atmosphere is present and what protection level equipment needs for each. IECEx is the equivalent international certification scheme, run to the same underlying IEC standards, and is widely accepted outside the EU. A radio certified to either scheme has been independently tested and its ignition-protection method verified, and the certificate specifies the exact configuration (radio, battery, antenna) that stays compliant.
WPC wireless operating licence (India)
India's Wireless Planning and Coordination wing, under the Department of Telecommunications, regulates who may own and operate radio transmitting equipment. Radios operating outside the licence-free PMR446 band generally need a wireless operating licence tied to an assigned frequency, and the equipment itself needs WPC Equipment Type Approval before it can be imported, sold or used. Buyers running licensed fleets should confirm current licensing and equipment-approval requirements with the WPC before deployment, as frequency assignments and approval requirements are administered case by case.
Installation notes

For a site relying on a repeater or base station, antenna height and placement matter more than transmitter power: mounting the antenna as high as practical, clear of structural steel, tanks and other metal masses, does more for coverage than a stronger radio. Feedline loss adds up over long cable runs, so keeping the repeater or base unit close to the antenna, or using low-loss cable when it can't be, preserves the gain the height provides. Before any licensed equipment is put into service, confirm the wireless operating licence and equipment approval are in place for the frequencies being used, and for ATEX-rated installations, verify that every component in use, battery, antenna and any accessory, matches what's listed on the equipment's hazardous-area certificate.

Do I need a licence to use a two-way radio in India?

It depends on the frequency. Radios operating on the PMR446 band (446 to 446.2 MHz) at the permitted low power can be used without a wireless operating licence. Radios operating on other frequencies, which is typical for most commercial and industrial fleets needing longer range or dedicated channels, need a wireless operating licence from India's WPC wing, and the equipment itself needs WPC type approval. Confirm current requirements with the WPC before deploying a licensed fleet.

What does ATEX or IECEx certification actually mean for a radio?

It means the radio has been independently tested and certified as intrinsically safe for use in a defined hazardous area, an environment where flammable gas, vapour or dust may be present. The certificate specifies the exact radio, battery and antenna combination that keeps it compliant; swapping in an uncertified battery or antenna can void the protection even if the radio itself is rated.

Can a digital DMR radio talk to an older analog radio?

Most digital radios can be set to an analog mode and will talk to analog radios on the same frequency, but they lose the digital-only benefits (clearer audio at range, two talk paths per channel, individual calling) while doing so. Whether it makes sense depends on whether the fleet is being upgraded gradually or all at once.
