A radio built for the worst-case scenario

What IMO MSC.149(77) actually specifies

IMO Resolution MSC.149(77) is the performance standard for survival craft two-way VHF radiotelephone apparatus adopted under SOLAS, setting requirements covering operating temperature range, water and impact resistance, buoyancy, battery endurance and basic operational simplicity, since a survivor operating the radio may be under extreme stress, in poor light, wearing gloves or with cold, wet hands. This is a considerably more demanding specification than a standard commercial handheld is built or tested against.

Cold-weather performance

The IC-GM1600's rating for over 8 hours of operation at −20°C reflects a genuine, tested capability rather than a marketing figure, since a survival scenario is not guaranteed to occur in mild conditions, and a radio that fails or loses capacity in cold weather defeats its entire purpose at precisely the moment it matters most. Standard consumer and even many commercial handhelds are not tested or rated for this kind of sustained cold-weather endurance.

Simplicity as a safety feature

A survival craft radio's operational simplicity is itself part of what makes it fit for purpose: a survivor should not need to remember a complex sequence of button presses or menu navigation under the stress of an actual emergency. This is why survival craft radios are generally built around a minimal, purpose-specific control set rather than the extensive channel and feature list a general-purpose commercial handheld offers, trading flexibility for reliability under genuinely adverse conditions.

The IC-GM1600E: the MED variant

The IC-GM1600E meets MED 2014/90/EU "Wheel Mark" requirements alongside the same strict environmental performance for GMDSS use, covered in more depth in the dedicated Wheel Mark article elsewhere in this series, and adds a lithium battery pack with what Icom describes as superior low-temperature characteristics, alongside a large keypad designed for positive button action even with cold or gloved hands.

Where this fits a vessel's overall carriage requirement

Survival craft VHF radios are a required component of a SOLAS-compliant vessel's lifesaving appliance carriage, generally required in a specified quantity relative to the vessel's liferafts and survival craft, independent of the sea area the vessel is certified for. This is a separate carriage requirement from the vessel's primary bridge communication equipment, covered elsewhere in this series, and should be checked and stocked accordingly rather than assumed to be covered by the vessel's other GMDSS radios.

  • The exact quantity required for your vessel's specific liferaft and survival craft complement, confirmed against classification society and flag state requirements.
