What the Chetak platform is
The Chetak is the Indian-license-built version of the Aérospatiale Alouette III, a light utility helicopter design dating to the late 1950s that has served the Indian Navy, Army and Air Force for decades across utility transport, search and rescue, and shipborne operations. A design of this vintage was originally built around mechanical, analog flight and navigation instruments, the standard avionics technology of its era.
What a glass cockpit upgrade actually replaces
"Glass cockpit" refers to replacing an aircraft's traditional mechanical, dial-based instruments, altimeter, artificial horizon, airspeed indicator and the rest, with digital electronic displays presenting the same, and typically considerably more, information on integrated screens. In 2018, ASPL introduced a glass cockpit upgrade to the Chetak helicopter platform, bringing modern digital avionics to an airframe whose basic mechanical and aerodynamic design long predates the electronics being fitted to it.
Why upgrade an existing airframe rather than replace it
A proven, well-understood airframe like the Chetak, with decades of operational history, established maintenance procedures and a known safety record, represents a substantial existing investment and operational familiarity that a wholesale aircraft replacement would discard. A glass cockpit retrofit extends that airframe's useful operational life and improves its navigation and situational awareness capability without the cost, disruption and retraining a full replacement programme would involve, a genuinely different engineering and procurement calculus from equipping a new-build aircraft.
